Fitness versus Surgery
Every single one of us at some point in our lives becomes image conscious. Be it for an impending wedding, or holiday or some special occasion, we all want to look the best we can. Some of us want to be able to do this with little or no effort. Is surgery the easy option? Or are we prepared to work hard for that gorgeous body?
So - fitness or surgery! What will you choose?
We all have problem areas. Our self-perception can let us down at times. We look in the mirror and all we see are the things we don't like; thighs too big, bum too saggy, still look pregnant even though junior is 6 years old!
Sounds familiar?
It is all too easy nowadays to take out a loan for the things we want but can't really afford. Debt in this country is spiralling out of control. If you want lipo-sculpture on your thighs, to get rid of those unwanted fat cells, it can start at a cost of £2,000.00 with an additional £500.00 per extra area. After the surgery there is a recovery period of about 48 hours, leakage can occur for about 24 hours post-op. There can be extensive bruising and swelling and support garments have to be worn for several weeks afterwards. That is, of course, if you are a suitable candidate for surgery. Not everyone is. One criteria is that you have to be within your weight limit for your height, so grossly obese people wouldn't qualify.
If loose skin and "slack" muscle around the abdomen is your problem then you might want to consider a tummy-tuck. These start at around £2,500.00 and can rise to a staggering £10,000.00. This is a much more complicated and time consuming procedure, that involves a lot ofmuscle work and sometimes naval reconstruction, with approximately 6-8 weeks off work to recover. That is as long as it is successful, which I understand most surgeries are. However, things can go wrong. There is a risk of scarring, open wounds can be prone to infections, and anaesthetics carry with them their own risks, breathing difficulties, headaches, nausea etc.
On the plus side, with a good reputable surgeon, results can be good and are quick. Consider this though in your evaluations - for the price of a basic lipo-sculpture you can have a quality one-to-one session, 1 hour per week, with a Personal Trainer, in a gym for a whole YEAR. The benefits are multi-fold. In a one-to-one coaching session, a Personal Trainer will target those problem areas also. There are no risks involved. You will become fitter in general, you will increase your life expectancy, your energy levels will rise as will your metabolic rate thus burning more calories at rest. Blood pressure will come down. Heart and lungs will work more efficiently, increasing blood supply to the skin which, in turn, will appear healthier. Bone density will improve, you will become stronger and leaner, your co-ordination and balance will improve. In fact every part of your body will look and feel amazing!
A fireman doesn't tackle the smoke he tackles the source of the fire. So in electing to have surgery are you avoiding the real issue? Is time a problem or motivation? A Personal Trainer will work with you to motivate you and restructure your lifestyle to accommodate your working life, your social life, your exercise habits which will enable a more efficient use of your time. Therefore not having to resort to such extreme measures. I am not against surgery for the right reasons. There are no easy short cuts. I know good surgeons who will advise their patients they do not consider appropriate candidates for surgical procedures to go to a gym and get advice regarding exercise and nutrition from a suitably qualified specialist. It is a lot more fun and a lot less painful.
